Background of the Study

Social support is widely recognized as a critical factor in promoting mental health, particularly among elderly individuals who may face isolation, loneliness, and declining physical health. Social support systems, such as family, friends, and community organizations, provide emotional, instrumental, and informational assistance that can mitigate feelings of depression and improve overall well-being in older adults (Ibrahim & Shuaibu, 2023). In Nasarawa State, elderly individuals may experience various stressors such as financial insecurity, poor health, and lack of social engagement, which can contribute to depression. This study will explore the role of social support systems in preventing depression among the elderly in Nasarawa State and how these support systems can be strengthened to improve mental health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Depression is a prevalent mental health issue among elderly individuals, especially those who lack strong social support systems. In Nasarawa State, elderly patients may not have sufficient access to social networks, leading to increased vulnerability to depression. This study aims to investigate how social support systems can prevent depression in elderly individuals and the specific types of support that are most effective in this population.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of social support systems in preventing depression among elderly individuals in Nasarawa State.

  2. To identify the types of social support that are most effective in preventing depression among elderly individuals.

  3. To recommend strategies for strengthening social support systems to reduce depression among elderly individuals in Nasarawa State.

Research Questions

  1. How do social support systems influence the prevention of depression in elderly individuals in Nasarawa State?

  2. What types of social support are most effective in preventing depression among elderly individuals in Nasarawa State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to strengthen social support systems for elderly individuals in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Strong social support systems are associated with lower levels of depression among elderly individuals in Nasarawa State.

  2. Emotional and instrumental support are the most effective forms of social support in preventing depression among elderly individuals.

  3. Strengthening social support networks will lead to a reduction in depression among elderly individuals in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on elderly individuals in Nasarawa State who are receiving varying levels of social support from family, friends, or community organizations. Limitations include the subjective nature of measuring depression and social support, as well as potential bias in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Depression: A mental health condition characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, and a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.
